Balancing Hormones With Yoga Therapy.

On Saturday I attended a Hormone Yoga Therapy workshop at Alma Vale where I work. I was really interested in learning this form of yoga which claims to help with menopausal symptoms, PCOS and even thyroid problems too. According to the teacher, women who have practiced HYT for a few months have even come off of Thyroxine as their levels have improved.

I was delighted to be offered a special place on the course to learn in more detail how this type of yoga can help some of the women who come to see me as well as for my own personal benefit as I am experiencing peri-menopausal symptoms myself.

The day consisted of learning and repeating a set routine of postures and poses that all help improve hormonal function and circulation. As well as the postures we were also taught a very dynamic style of breathing that you do whilst in the poses and again this helps with circulation, the transportation of oxygen around the body and to the reproductive system, strengthens the stomach muscles, massages the intestines and is both relaxing and invigorating. There is quite a lot of pelvic floor exercises too which is so important for every young girl and woman of all ages.

Many of my clients know how much I love and value the importance of visualisations and guided imagery to help connect the mind and the body and the hormone yoga also uses this to connect with the main endocrine glands the ovaries, pituitary and thyroid. Yoga Nidra is also used in the session and at the end (oh I love Yoga Nidra!!!!).

We were also taught relaxation techniques including breath work, chanting and relaxing exercises to do before bed.

From the course I have now learnt a wonderful yoga routine that must be done on an empty stomach at the start of the day. It should only take about 30-40minutes and must be done everyday if possible and I have started a new morning routine of getting up early practicing my yoga and relaxation and having a breakfast smoothie – I really hope I can maintain the commitment!!!!

As someone who is in early menopause and who doesn’t menstruate properly anymore after the session I noticed a bit of spotting which has continued for the days following the workshop. I’ve already noticed improved flexibility and feel more clear headed and invigorated. In a months time I will post an update as to any other changes that may have occurred – I am looking forward to experiencing the promise of thicker hair, younger looking skin, a trimmer waistline, less brain fog, to feel more relaxed and even have an increased libido!!!

Andrea will be running one more workshop this year at Yanley Court on the 7th October 2019.

http://hormoneyogatherapy.co.uk/ Andrea was certified as a hormone yoga therapist in June 2016 after successfully finishing a HYT training course with Dinah Rodrigues in Prague. Dinah Rodrigues is the founder ot this technique and the only teacher who can certify students to become teachers. Her courses are taught mainly in the USA, Germany, Denmark, Netherlands and Czech republic so the technique is very well known in those countries. Hormone yoga therapy is not well known in the UK and there are only couple of teachers here. Andrea is the only hormone yoga therapy teacher in Bristol and the surrounding areas.
