Pregnancy Massage and Reflexology
Pregnancy should be one of the most special times in a woman’s life, however many women suffer both physically and emotionally. Muscular aches and pains, changes to posture, hormones creating havoc with emotions and body systems and stresses of modern day living can leave many women feeling low, uncomfortable and desperate to reclaim their bodies. In addition, some women may be pregnant during particularly stressful or emotional times and may need a little extra support to help manage these emotions.
Pregnancy massage and reflexology are both excellent tools can support women throughout pregnancy during this amazing period of transformation by helping to alleviate pregnancy related problems and most importantly by providing a time and space where the nurturer can feel nurtured and cared for herself.
Working from the Natural Pregnancy Partnership I have vast experience of working with a wide range of pregnant women who have all been unique in their individual pregnancies and needs. I have been honoured to work with a clients who have needed additional support and I have worked with them throughout their pregnancies; I have experience in working with; miscarriage, loss and grief, Pelvic Girdle Pain or SPD, fertility treatment and early pregnancy support, heightened stress and anxiety.
Regular massage and reflexology sessions throughout pregnancy can help woman to cope with the physical and emotional demands of pregnancy. They provide a time and a space for mother to connect with her baby/ies, to enjoy being pregnant and to feel nurtured. Plus the babes seem to enjoy it too!
Pregnancy Massage – safely relieving muscular tension, gently mobilising joints and stretching muscles.
Contrary to popular belief pregnant women CAN have massage and reflexology, even in the first trimester by a specially trained professional. If fact I feel that it would be mean to deny an expectant mother such pleasures and relief.
Depending on my clients needs, my massage sessions will either be held on the couch or on a futon and will mostly be conducted in the side lying position. Where appropriate I may incorporate some energetic work into my sessions as I am Reiki trained and my pregnancy massage course was also shiatsu influenced. I have found that my clients very much enjoy this part of the treatment, which can have a balancing and calming effect – fantastic for quietening a busy mind. I also like to incorporate some connecting work with the baby, which may involve gentle abdominal massage, breath-work, or simple energetic holds and visualisations a great way to quieten the mind allowing relaxation to flow. As well as using traditional massage strokes I will also use stretches and joint mobilisation where necessary. I may also incorporate the use of a pregnancy ball into the session which allows deeper pressure on the lower back and sacrum to relieve pain in these areas which can increase as the pregnancy develops. Following the session I may offer some simple exercises as ‘homework’ to help ensure the benefits of the session continues.
Pregnancy Reflexology – a targeted approach to a deeper sense of relaxation and internal balance
Reflexology is a gentle therapy that uses gentle pressure on areas of the feet that correspond to organs and systems within the body. By working these reflex points, I aim to bring about balance and homeostasis to the body which in turn helps facilitate repair and restoration.
Reflexology can be used throughout each trimester to relieve pregnancy related symptoms and can be great for balancing hormones and can be very effective in the first and final trimester where the hormonal shift is at its greatest. It is an excellent way to promote the relaxation response which can be enjoyed by both mother and baby/ies.
Reflexology for labour – assisting the body and preparing for labour
Reflexology can be used to help prepare the body for labour by ensuring the body and mind are balanced, relaxed and ready for the incredible journey.
During a labour preparation treatment I will focus my attention on the hormonal and the reproductive systems with the intention of waking and shaking things up. I can also work labour induction points in the feet that can help the body and mind to let go. It is recommended that you receive regular reflexology treatments throughout the final trimester to prepare the body and mind both physically and emotionally for labour.
If you have a stretch and sweep booked in I would advise a reflexology session a few days before to help with its efficacy.
I often get women coming to me at the end of their trimester for reflexology worried about going overdue, baby will be born when he/ she is ready and I can only help relieve stresses, tensions and anxieties helping to improve the flow of the lovely hormones that prepare the body for birthing.
